We started in the late 1980s as a project run by volunteers and in 1999 we became a constituted body and registered with the Charity Commission. In the year 2012 we further developed our status to become an incorporated body as a registered Company Limited by Guarantee and Charity under one constitution. We have a board of directors from a broad range of backgrounds and professions who are drawn from across the local community. Our current chairperson is the senior News Editor of the local newspaper group, the Nelson Leader Times.
We are fortunate to still have committed volunteers from different backgrounds and generations taking ownership of our activities at many levels; from governance to specific activities which they will help to design, organise and deliver.
Our founding members came together with a commitment to serve community causes, to develop a structure, access funds to resource a work force and to deliver upon important community agendas. This leadership also brought with them traditional styles of community activism, if you see a problem within communities and issues that people face, get up and do something about it. We are fortunate that this passion and tradition has remained within the character of our personality as an organisation. The experience gained and lessons learnt over our history continue to influence our drive today.
Our aims are to promote a realisation that diversity, is a positive aspect in the make-up of our society. People must view the variety in Culture and Faith within our community as richness and be aware of commonalities in our identity as citizens of a multi-cultural and multi-faith country.
Ultimately we strive to improve community relations and community cohesion by raising awareness and understanding amongst people about different cultures; promoting common values; and helping people to develop friendships that cross cultural and community boundaries.
Having developed and sustained our work for nearly two-decades, our history, track record, profile and current work has firmly marked our position as an organisation committed to ground-breaking and innovative work in the field of Education, Interfaith and Community Cohesion agendas.
